TRAFFIC RULES IN PORTUGAL

If you plan to drive during the Formula 1 weekend, knowing a few key local rules will make your journey smoother and safer. Driving in Portugal is generally calm and pleasant, and the roads around the Algarve are in good condition – just keep these basics in mind:

Portugal drives on the right-hand side, and seat belts are compulsory for everyone in the car. Traffic signs are clear, and speed cameras are common, especially near towns and toll roads.

  • Speed limits: 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns, 90 km/h (56 mph) on rural roads, and 120 km/h (75 mph) on motorways.
  • Alcohol limit: 0.05% (0.02% for new or professional drivers). Police often carry out random checks, so it’s best not to drink at all if you’re driving.
  • Mobile phones: Using a handheld phone is prohibited – only hands-free systems are allowed.
  • Children: Under 12s must travel in the back seat with an appropriate child restraint.
  • Roundabouts: Cars already inside have priority; always signal before you exit.
  • Toll roads: Many motorways are paid. You can use the Via Verde electronic device or pay at toll booths.
  • Parking: Always park in marked areas. Fines and towing are common for illegal parking.

Overall, Portuguese drivers are polite but can be quick on open roads. Stay alert, keep to the limits, and you’ll find driving around the Algarve both easy and enjoyable – with plenty of scenic views along the way.
