Attending a Formula 1 race at the International Algarve Circuit is an unforgettable experience – from the roar of the engines echoing across the hills of Portimão to the electric atmosphere in the grandstands. To make sure your weekend runs smoothly and you don’t miss a single moment, here’s a practical guide with insider tips on how to meet your favourite drivers, behave respectfully around them, find the best viewing spots, and make the most of your time at the track.
Meeting your favourite Formula 1 driver isn’t easy without a special paddock or VIP pass, but it’s not impossible either. With a bit of luck and good timing, you might get a handshake, autograph, or even a photo. Here’s how:
Fanzones
Some drivers take part in Fanzone activities organised throughout the race weekend. Keep an eye on the official social media channels of the event, teams, drivers, and sponsors – they often post the exact times and locations of autograph sessions or fan appearances. Arriving early is always a good idea, as these areas can fill up quickly.
Outside the circuit
Not all drivers stay at the circuit overnight. Many travel from nearby hotels each morning, usually arriving before the start of the day’s programme to avoid heavy traffic. At some events, drivers park near the main entrance or dedicated paddock parking areas. Waiting nearby might give you a chance to catch a glimpse of them – just be respectful and patient.
Every driver is different, but a few simple rules apply to all situations:
Large F1 crowds mean that every good idea – like grabbing lunch or finding a restroom – will occur to thousands of others at the same time. Try to plan your day slightly differently from the crowd. Eat, shop, or take breaks outside of peak times to avoid long queues and make the most of your experience.
Our grandstand guide can help you choose the best viewing spot. Think about what you want from your race experience before buying your ticket:
Keep in mind that distances around the circuit can be long, and moving between grandstands may take 20–30 minutes, especially in crowded areas. It’s usually best to minimise walking and enjoy the action from one or two main spots.
